Tornados and Homeowners Insurance

Last year there were 55 deaths related to tornados. Alabama with 23 and Tennessee with 17 led the way.

As if that’s not bad enough, more than 1000 tornadoes are recorded each year in the United States. That’s enough to make you think about your homeowner’s insurance coverage in the case of a tornado.

Does Your Homeowners Policy Cover You if a Tornado Strikes?

Yes it does. Up to the policy limits. Insurance experts recommend the following actions you can take to make sure your policy, safety and property are all in harmony:

  • Review your homeowner’s policy to make sure you have the coverage amount you need. What’s excluded? What will your replacement costs be in the event of tornado damage?
  • Check your roof. The strong rushing winds of a tornado can damage a roof covered with weakened shingles.
  • Look at the trees and tree branches close to your home. Could any be ripped off, fall on your home and damage it?
  • Check your doors and windows. Damage to them may not be preventable but it could be reduced
  • Apply for a repair grant, if applicable

And remember, contact your insurance agent immediately if you’re a victim of tornado damage.
